The Bridges of Paris at Night is a collection of nighttime black and white photographs of the 35 bridges that cross the Seine between the upstream and downstream limits of the boulevard Périphérique which circles the City of Paris. This website features a portion of the collection.
The collection is comprised of photographs in which the manipulation of the camera, playing with the shadow and light effects, isolates and elevates these important architectural symbols of Paris far beyond their daytime prosaic function.
Most people - even Parisiens - are not cognizant of the majesty of the bridges at night except for what they see from the roadway as they drive by.
The photography, mostly shot during the winter time, was shot by photographer Gary Zuercher over a period of five years. All of the work has been shot on film, developed and printed in a traditional darkroom resulting in gelatin silver, selenium toned prints.
